Yoga is understood to most people, but few really understand what is it, or exercise it. It is said that it helps or cures many illnesses; but many believe that these remedies are just mental.

There are 9 major styles of Yoga, namely - Bhakti, Hatha, Jnana, Karma, Kundalini, Mantra, Raja, Tantra and Yantra. All of them try to unite the body, the spirit and the mind. These are alleged to achieve harmony, which ends in tranquility. This is a holistic approach to attain happy life. Literally, yoga means union or unity.
Yoga originated in India several thousand years ago. It's the mother of many present day Asian martial arts and many health wellness programs. Bhakti, Jnana, Karma and Raja yoga are the more advanced forms of it.
Hatha Yoga is the hottest style outside India. Most starting practitioners use this style. Hatha Yoga and its sub styles concentrate on the physical health, which is said to result in better mental health condition. Those Hatha Yoga practitioners outside India don't often deal with spiritual health. Some consider this Yoga style as Hinduism in a disguise that deals only with the teaching of improved body and mind. Therefore if you would like to start practicing yoga, you must figure out what direction your teacher or Guru is leading you. Is it to physical, mental or spiritual well being? This is also correct when you choose books, cds and other yoga educational materials.
In total, Yoga is a benign religion. It teaches toleration and unity. It favors unity over sectarianism, tolerance over prejudice and you must learn how to put up with variety. In total the purpose of yoga is world peace through unity. These elements influence and improve one's attitude toward others and his environment. By doing these, he is also improving his psychological, physical and spiritual health. So it is a religion that improves oneself through himself.
