Digital scrapbooking kits are everywhere on the Internet. The trick is, how do you put together a great content collection on a budget? Once you find all of these kits, how do you sort out which are the ones you actually need for your scrapbooks?

Thankfully, the Internet has a wealth of digital content priced very reasonably - sometimes free! Even kits by top designers can be bought at a great value on some digital scrapbooking sites. Professionals and hobbyists can be very generous with their work and even give away a lot of it for free, on the condition that you only use their digital kits in a non-commercial environment.

Even still, collecting the right digital scrapbooking supplies can be overwhelming. Downloading everything you come across on the Internet may not be the best idea, even if the items are free. You want the best-quality, most versatile kits you can get, and you don't want to clutter your computer with items you will never use.

    1. The first step in building a smart scrapbooking collection is to write out a list of themes that you are interested in, like Christmas, Baby, Wedding, Little Girl, etc. Make sure that you include a few "generic" kits on your lists as these will be the most versatile for the most projects. With your plan in hand, you can start evaluating the quality and content of the kits you find in your search.

    2. The next thing to do is consider the various components of a complete scrapbook page: embellishments, backgrounds, paper scraps, and photoshapes. If you come across a kit that includes all of these items, you may have struck scrapbooking gold! Kits that have a variety of element types, held together by a coordinating style, are the savvy way to go.

    3. So that you can make the smartest choices in selecting your kits, look for a website or digital store that lists all of the items included in each kit. Ideally, the site will also include images that give you not only an excellent idea of what's included, but also of the kit's style. The last thing you want to do is waste time and/or money downloading a kit that isn't what you were expecting!

    4. Besides scrapbooking kits, you should also be on the lookout for pre-designed layout pages (sometimes known as "quick pages"), or scrapbook template pages that you can edit as you wish. Here, it's best to go with the editable layout since this means that you can tweak its elements to make the page truly your own. Since you're able to make changes to editable templates and use them again and again changing them slightly each time, they are definitely the most versatile of the pre-fab scrapbooking pages.

    5. Another great way to extend the use of your digital scrapbooking supplies is with a creative digital scrapbooking software program. The best programs allow you to easily colorize, crop, and add effecs to your embellishments and papers. That means that you can alter the look of your digital content with a few mouse clicks, and use that same content in a whole variety ways in a whole bunch of projects.

    6. If you want a real "steal", look for mega content packs that include the work of multiple designers. Mega packs come with themes, editable-templates and coordinating kits complete with backgrounds, paper scraps, embellishments, and shapes. Not only do you get everything you need to build great pages, you get a variety of styles when a number of different designers have contributed to the pack.

    7. And don't forget to consider the digital scrapbooking program you choose as a crucial part of your digital scrapbooking collection. Look for a program that includes a large digital content pack with all the components for making complete scrapbook pages. Ideally, your software should have editable templates and coordinating kits so that matching colors and styles is a breeze.

At the end of the day, it pays to first do a little bit of thinking about the kinds of scrapbooking projects you are interested in making. Next, you can search for kits that have coordinating elements, and everything you need to make a complete page. To maximize the life of your collection, make sure to get a hold of editable template pages, and a software program that gives you creative tools for altering the appearance of your digital elements.
