Most people have trouble keeping their closets organized. Cluttered, stuffed, dusty and messy are words that most people will use to describe their closet when asked. I challenge you to get your closet organized, clean and manageable. The secret is to have a place for everything. You have to learn to make the most of useable space and categorize like items.

The first thing you need to do is to pull everything out of the closet. Organize your belongings into several categories. Things you use, things you can give to a charity or throw in the garbage and things you can give to friends or family.

This top shelf can be used for anything large and bulky that you don't use every day. Suitcases, duffle bags, boxes, sheets, quilts or out-of-season items can all be stored up high. To eliminate the dust problem, wrap each thing in plastic wrap or in large plastic bags. This also makes labeling easy so that you don't tear down the whole stack of blankets going for the one on the bottom that you want. If they do fall, they won't get dirty or come unfolded.

Begin by organizing your hanging clothes by type such as separating tops from bottoms. If your outfit has a top and bottom, utilize the bottom rod for the pants and skirts and the top rod for jackets, blouses or shirts. Another solution for your closet is to divide the shirts by type. Such as, sweaters, long sleeves, short sleeves etc. When you have a specific location for each type of clothing, it helps to give your closet a neater appearance. Thus, it is easier to find what you are looking for as well.

Many people have all different types of hangers; go out and purchase matching hangers for all your clothes; it will create a much nicer appearance of your hanging clothes. In addition, it allows all clothes to hang at the same level and nothing will be hanging below other clothes and thus maybe even becoming lost in your closet. These are simple closet solutions to revamp your closet.

Use pre-assembled cabinets in your design when possible. Shelf widths and heights are designed to standard industry measurement. This removes some of the guess-work for first time designers.

Plan sufficient space for your shoes. If you have an average number of shoes you may be able to place them under the hanging clothes sections. Otherwise, you should plan a full closet section for shoe storage. Shoe shelves should be a minimum of 2 feet wide to accomodate two pairs sitting tandem. Wider shelves should increase by increments of 12 inches (or approximately one pair of shoes).

If you still don't have enough room, then you really might need to downsize your wardrobe. Get rid of as much as possible. Shoes that are just old and scuffed or hurt your feet should be tossed out immediately. Old out of date clothing or clothes that don't fit quite right should be eliminated. Encourage yourself to stay organized by investing in some new matching clothes hangers. Remember that wooden hangers look very nice, they're functional and keep your clothing separated and hanging nice. Clean your closet today for a fresh outlook and organized life!
